Bored Panda approached Paul Woods and questioned him a little bit about his comics. First, we asked the artist what he or she thought were the best parts of making comics. We also wanted to know what keeps Paul inspired to keep making things. Woods told us, “Seeing my work in a newspaper or magazine is the most satisfying thing for me.” I grew up in the 1980s and read comics in the newspaper, so it’s great to see my work in print. I still enjoy making people laugh. I guess I haven’t changed much since high school when I would draw funny pictures of my teachers and show them to my friends. I’ve always wanted to draw. I have a day job, so drawing is a way for me to unwind and rest. I’ll stop when it starts to feel like a job or “work” to me. Over the years, I’ve redone a lot of my old comics, which I really enjoy.

Paul Woods was asked how his art style has changed over time and what led to these changes. He said, “I feel like my art style has changed so much over the years. At first, I drew everyone in my comics without shoes, but as I got better at drawing, it started to look silly, so I switched. Now, I pay a lot of attention to the background and add a lot of depth to the landscapes. When I draw animals, I have started to look at pictures in books or on the Internet as examples. I’ve found that this has really helped me make my pictures better. One thing that hasn’t changed is that I still draw all of my sketches by hand, first with a pencil on paper and then with black ink. I don’t use a tablet to draw.”

Next, we asked Paul to tell us about the hardest part of making a comic and how the artist gets around any problems that come up during the process. Woods said, “I think the hardest part is coming up with something that hasn’t been done before. I often think I have a new joke or idea, but a quick check on Google shows me that the joke has already been told. This can be a little frustrating sometimes. The other problem is a lack of time. I have a full-time job and three kids, so sometimes it’s hard for me to find the time to make a drawing.

Then, we wanted to know how Woods manages to keep the creative parts of his work and the business parts, like marketing and advertising, in balance. Paul told us, “I’ve never really done much with my comics in terms of promotion and business. My work is represented by an Australian company that has found different print and online publications to show my comics. Other than that, I’ve just used social media like Instagram and Reddit.”

We wanted to know what the artist thought about what makes a good comic and what mistakes artists should try to avoid. Paul said, “The best comedians come up with something new and make you laugh out loud. People sometimes care too much about how good the picture is, but I think the joke is what’s important. It’s better to have a bad drawing and a good joke than a great drawing and a bad joke.”

Lastly, we asked Paul how he keeps up with the latest news and trends in the comics business and how he thinks it will change in the future. “I stay in touch with a few different comic artists through social media and email,” the artist said. There has been a lot of bad news recently about the comic book business and the death of print media, but I think comics will continue to live and change as they always have. With the rise of online publishing sites and social media, I think that most comics will be read online in the near future. The tools we use to make comics are also changing a lot. Most artists now use tablets to draw their comics, which they then email to companies or post online. Because of the growth of the internet, anyone can draw a picture and post it online, where everyone can see it.
