At age three, Matt Grodsky stood in front of his preschool class and declared that he would one day marry Laura Scheel, his classmate at the time. On December 30, 2016, he finally did.

Grodsky was drawn to Scheel from the moment they met in preschool in Phoenix, Arizona, where they are both now 23 years old.

The first time Grodsky met her, “she was always a girl who let me follow her around,” he remembered, “and I’d always try to impress her by reciting lines from movies like ‘The Lion King.'”

When Grodsky and Scheel were children, they often went on playdates and went to the movies together.

Scheel and Grodsky were both smitten. As he remarked, “When you like someone, you just kind of get up and say it.” That is exactly what he did. All of his 3- and 4-year-old friends broke into laughter as he announced his love for Scheel. What was Grodsky’s reply? “All you have to do is wait.”

It turned out to be a long wait. It was only through Christmas cards that the young couple’s families, who went to different elementary schools, were able to keep in touch as they grew up.

Scheel noticed Grodsky’s name on a friend’s phone in the fall of their freshman year of high school, again at two different schools. They discovered their buddy had gone to middle school with Grodsky, and when she learned that they had been a couple in preschool, she volunteered to reunite the two.

“I don’t think so!” was my reaction when I was a freshman in high school. It was Scheel’s opinion. She eventually gave him my number and we’ve been texting ever since.

Scheel and Grodsky started dating two weeks after they first met. It was time for college after four years and 15 school dances (all of their high school dances combined). This time, they went to two different colleges, but they were in two different states.

“We were hesitant to go out and get jobs right out of high school. We were debating whether or not to remain in the same group. “No, we don’t strive to fix it. As explained by Scheel,

They pulled it off. Over 1,600 miles apart, Scheel attended Northern Arizona University while Grodsky attended Columbia College Chicago. In their first year, they struggled to find a routine that worked for them, but they finally found one by watching “Friends” on Netflix together while they weren’t together.

Grodsky popped the question when they were still in college. On the eve of their final year, he took her back to where it all began: their preschool, on May 23, 2015.

When Grodsky got engaged two months earlier, she had already purchased an engagement ring and gained her father’s blessing. Prior to their arrival, he had even set up his brother at the school so that he could get the perfect shot of the event.

Grodsky kept a close eye on his pockets as he made his way to the meeting place. His response was to get down on one knee as soon as they arrived at the location.

“Oh my god, is this really happening?” I said. Scheel made the statement. What an incredible piece of jewelry! I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw it. ‘It makes me so happy.’

An emphatic “yes!” was the response. A picnic basket filled with bridal magazines and sparkling cider was carried out by Grodsky’s brother, who bowed out to give the newly engaged couple a private lunch (the same basket that Grodsky’s father used when he proposed to his mother).

The pre-school sweethearts said “I do” on December 30, 2016. During the wedding, Grodsky’s uncle, who officiated, said it best: “While for other preschoolers, finding snacks and sleeping mats are important, for them it was all about finding their soulmates.”
