Hello, my name is Giselle Dekel. I was born in Vienna, Austria, and grew up in Antwerp, Belgium. I took art classes in high school and then went to Shenkar College in Israel to get a degree in textile design. When I was young, I wanted to be a pattern creator because I loved them so much.

After I graduated from college, I did everything I could to get a job in that field. But the years went by and nothing changed, so I gave up. This is the sad story of a lot of art and design students.

I fell into a mild depression when I was working normal jobs that didn’t require creativity. Having no way to express my creativity (other than coming up with kid-friendly meals) really hurt me. Eventually, my creativity came back, and after a lot of experimenting, I started drawing again.

I use a mix of painting and Photoshop to make them. Even though drawing on paper or canvas is still my favorite way to express myself, I really enjoy making art on a computer.

2020 marked a big change in my art. Being in such physically and financially uncomfortable situations really pushed me to push myself and make art that came from this new place. The pictures I made after that were more honest, and a lot of people could relate to them because so many of us were in the same position.

I like to write about easy things that happen in everyday life and add a lot of humor and sarcasm. I don’t know if I could live without laughter. It’s what keeps me going.

From then on, I gave myself permission to make anything that came to mind or that I felt inside. Knowing that so many people all over the world feel the same way made me want to just do it.

#4 “Mom, Look What I Made”

People ask me most often how I manage to be a mom of three, keep a house, cook, do tons of cleaning, and run an illustration business full-time. I’ll be honest with you: I’ve never met a woman who didn’t do all of these different things and do them well at the same time.

I don’t keep a plan for myself. I only do so for my kids. I make a list of things I need to do the next day the night before, and that’s what works for me. It helps me not feel like I can’t handle everything that’s going on. I try not to overthink when I make art or do anything else in life. I stay away from it at any cost. When I have a good idea, for example, I just go for it. I won’t use it if it looks bad.

The good feedback from fans and art lovers from all over the world is by far the best part of this job. It’s overwhelming how many people find joy in my work or see themselves in my drawings. Every day, I talk to at least one person about art.   Of course, this is great for the ego, but what I like most about it is that it proves what I already thought: that underneath it all, we are all the same.
