Brock Turner, a former student at Stanford University in California, was sentenced to only six months in June 2016 for sexually attacking a woman who was unconscious. This made a lot of people angry, and for good reason. And they were even more upset when Turner got out of jail on September 2 after spending only half of his already short sentence.

Yana Mazurkevich, a 20-year-old student at Ithaca College in New York, chose to make the photo series below in response to this injustice. The project, called “It Happened,” was made for a media platform called Current Solutions that raises awareness about sexual assault, and as you can see, the message is pretty strong. Mazurkevich wrote on her Facebook page, “In response to Brock Turner’s early release, this photo series aims to continue the conversation about sexual assault and give a big middle finger to Turner and his 3-month jail time.”
